Bio

TJ Wharton joined Guilford Technical Community College as Head Baseball Coach in January 2025, bringing with him a proven track record of program building, player development, and performance innovation.

Before returning to GTCC, Wharton served as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Florida Institute of Technology, where he recruited top Community College/High School recruiting classes in the nation and led academic monitoring initiatives to support student-athlete success.

Prior to Florida Tech, Wharton spent three seasons at Maryville College, where he oversaw hitting, recruiting, and performance coordination. Under his leadership, Maryville led the nation in hits and runs at the Division III level prior to the pandemic. He also launched the program’s social media presence and implemented innovative player development systems that enhanced both on-field results and team culture.

TJ Wharton’s coaching career also includes time with St. Petersburg College, Eckerd College, the New York Yankees (as a performance science assistant and bullpen catcher), and summer league programs including the Licking County Settlers and Palm Beach Snowbirds, where his teams achieved standout records and championship success.

A former collegiate and professional player himself, Wharton competed for the Evansville Otters, White Sands Pupfish, and Ottawa Champions, and starred at Catawba College, where he was a two-time First-Team All-Conference and Southeast Region honoree and a 2015 Division II National Runner-Up.

Wharton holds a Master’s in Coaching Education from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Catawba College, along with NSCA CSCS certification.

Off the field, TJ enjoys spending golfing and spending time with his wife, Taylor, their daughter, Teagan, and their two dogs.
